Most expecting parents in New Jersey qualify for some paid family leave. Through the joint effort of the New Jersey Department of Labor and the Office of Innovation, an online tool has been developed to help expecting parents plan and estimate the dates when their maternity leave benefits start and end (myleavebenefits.nj.gov/timeline).
In NJ, maternity leave benefits consist of Temporary Disability Insurance (when you’re pregnant or recovering from childbirth) and Family Leave Insurance (when you’re bonding with or caring for your new baby). The tool estimates the benefits through a series of drop-down questions, including when a parent plans to stop working and the due date of the child. The benefits laid out in the tool are protections offered by the state; it does not assess paid leave benefits offered through the parents’ employment.
